This commentary piece discusses the relationship between hand hygiene and hospital-acquired infections (a.k.a. cross infection) and the benefits of evidence-based improvement over indicator-based improvement. Statistics from Ontario hospitals, in which hand hygiene reporting has been mandatory since 2009, are discussed in relation to indicator and evidence-based improvement indicators.
